books books wonderful books
A quick list of books I’ve read, with the briefest of commentaries, and (when I read them). Those with a longer response include a link to a blog or essay. Just getting started here, this won’t fill very quickly.
Joe Simpson, Touching the Void: two British mountaineers stretch the term ‘in extremis’; difficult ascent, harrowing descent, the ‘dead one’ left to die again in a crevass, from which he crawls through the mud and ice to die a third time in a dry riverbed. It’s not over until it’s over. Excellent depiction of subtle, awkward interactions between our protagonists. See also this blog entry. (March 2005)
